The brewery boasts 116 years of history. At the beginning it was called ‘Birra Capellari', later known as ‘Birra Itala Pilsen'. In the seventies Birra Peroni took over the company and since then the brewery has been called ‘Birra Peroni - Padua plant'.

The present packaging hall was set in the new industrial estate in the sixties, consisting of two bottle lines and a keg line. Later on in the seventies, the new brewing hall was started up. The initial production target was 25.000 hl, increasing to an annual production and sales volume of 200.000 hl by the sixties. In the seventies, the company carried out considerable expansions that resulted in a production capacity of 400.000 hl. The development projects carried out between 1998 and 2001 led to automation of the brewhouse and further extension of the BBT hall.

In 1999, the company enlarged by acquisition of an external beer storehouse (20.000m2), thereby increasing the plant warehousing to 70.000 hl. Since 2000, the company produces over 1.000.000 hl of beer. On 11 June 2001, the company was certified UNI EN ISO 9001.

Since 2002, a modern logistic system is in operation in the brewery. It consists of an automatically guided vehicle that connects the packaging plant to the external warehouse. In 2003, a new keg line of 540 kegs/hour was put into operation.

On 14 May 2003, SABMiller acquired the Birra Peroni Group. SABMiller plc is one of the world's largest brewers with brewing interests or distribution agreements in over 60 countries across five continents. The group's brands include premium international beers such as Miller Genuine Draft, Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Pilsner Urquell, as well as an exceptional range of market leading local brands.

In 2003, the brewery started the production of Miller Genuine Draft. In 2005 a new sterile and aseptic filling bottle line was put into operation (66.000 bottles/hour with 33 cl and 46.000 bottles/hour with 66 cl).

History

Heinrich Von Wunster established the brewery at the site of Seriate, province of Bergamo, at the end of 1879. After the first world war, the success of the Von Wunster brewery starts when the total output of beer in Italy was 1,5 million hl, produced by 85 breweries. In 1929 the name of the brewery was changed into ‘Birra Orobica'; it had an output of 7.000 hl.

Production continued, even at the time when raw materials were scarce. In 1950 the production is 22.000 hl, and this steadily increases to 124.000 hl in the early seventies. At that moment the definitive brand name ‘Von Wunster' was established. In 1986 the cooperation between the Von Wunster family and Interbrew came to an end by acquiring 100% of the company. In 1995 Heineken acquired the plant. At that time the technical capacity of the brewery was 700.000 hl. In 1999, the first extension took place to reach a capacity of 1.000.000 hl. Progressively the capacity has been extended to the current configuration of 2.500.000 hl.

The story of Trieste's beer began over two hundred years ago at the time of Maria Theresa, empress of Austria, when the city, dynamic offshoot of transalpine trade and culture, was given a new important district, Borgo Theresiano. Austrian merchants and businessmen soon moved in, bringing with them the customs of their homeland including their predilection for fine beer. In 1766 one of these enterprising gentlemen, W. Lenz, obtained a licence for the town's first Austrian brewery. That is how our beer got its name. Soon, master brewers came from Vienna with their closely-guarded secrets and expertise; they knew, even then, that the quality of beer is closely bound to its freshness and Theresianer today treasure their experience. The tradition of Borgo Theresiano's first brewery is alive even today in its new premises near Treviso, a town located north of Venice.

Theresianer's trademark, the harbour light, is a symbol of the history and culture of Trieste and it has been chosen for its iconographic importance, it is a symbol of our shining tradition and of our role as trustworthy ‘home port' for connoisseurs of fine beer.

Theresianer beer is brewed following the famous German Purity Law of 1516 and the brewery takes particularly care of the selection of the finest raw materials: water from the pure sources in the Dolomites, malt from only the best two-row spring barleys and hops personally selected by our scrupulous master brewers.

Tradition and technology get together in the automatic systems that guarantee the elevate standard of Theresianer beers. All the products follow a period of maturation that lasts at least 2 months. This is an important must that characterizes our brewery, which has an annual production of about 25.000 hectoliters.

Theresianer also pays particular attention to the environment, it is equipped with a state of the art waste water treatment plant (Kaldness Moving Bed TM) and it sells the yeast to the Sandoz Pharmaceutical company for analysis and research in antibiotics and medicines.

Great prestige has been reached by Theresianer by winning of the DLG gold medal in 2005 with the Strong Ale and in 2006 with the Vienna brand. Following the philosophy of pursuing the highest quality and the exclusive image, the company decided to operate only in the Horeca distribution channel so the production is concentrated most of all in kegs. However, the widespreading of bottles is increasing, even more in restaurants because of the new trend that combines traditional Italian food to beers, instead of wines.

The unbreakable link between tradition and modernity has always been a characteristic in the philosophy of Martino Zanetti, the company's owner, who dedicated his passion also in coffee. Close to the brewery is the roasting company of Hausbrandt Trieste 1892, equipped with the most modern technology, from the silos where the raw coffee is stored, to the selection, blending, roasting and packaging section, where the entire process of coffee preparation is followed with the maximum care and professionalism.

The prestigious role of Hausbrandt and Theresianer on the Italian and international markets has been achieved with dedication, commitment and passion.

Products: Premium Lager, Premium Pils, Vienna, Weizen, PaleAle, Strong Ale and the exclusive Bierbrand (distillate of beer).

The tour will include a visit to Hausbrandt Trieste 1892.
